We work hard to make Mt Cook School a place where tamariki, whānau and staff feel like they belong.

Our Programme

The Mt Cook Tech Centre focuses on hands-on learning with real-world contexts. We strongly consider the needs of our community and of individual children, encouraging quality, creativity and success. Coming to Tech each week serves as a gentle introduction to timetabled learning for our Year 7 and 8s, which helps prepare them for college.

Aims

  • To provide stimulating experiences in a range of technological areas and contexts

  • To consolidate, develop and extend children’s technological capability and knowledge

  • Empowering children for success in a technological society

  • To serve as a gentle introduction to timetabled learning

Operation

During the course of the school year, each child attending the centre on a timetabled basis will spend between SEVEN and EIGHT 85-minute sessions in each of the following areas:

  • Hard Materials

  • Electronics and Design

  • Digital Technology

  • Food Technology

  • Soft Materials

For those schools with a larger roll number of Year 7 and 8s, they will only have SIX or SEVEN sessions of the above areas, and will also have SIX or SEVEN sessions of:

  • Design and Modelling

As each school group arrives in Term 1, they will be split into small groups that remain largely unchanged throughout the year. Each group will remain in one area for 7-8 weeks and then move onto the next area.

When necessary, schools may need to be combined to make viable groups. We aim to not exceed 15 students per group for health and safety reasons, and also to maximise learning through close teacher contact.
