Literacy
We believe that literacy is foundational to academic success. Our tamariki are immersed in the rich world of books and language from the moment they start kura. Ākonga read and are read to every day. You will see them reading with their kaiako, their classmates and reading buddies from other classes in the school.
Writing happens daily in our classrooms. Our kaiako work hard to develop meaningful and relevant contexts for writing. Tamariki are supported to develop their voice as a writer and to recognise that they have something to say. They are explicitly taught the skills and features of writing including spelling and grammar.
We encourage whānau to read at home with their tamariki and support this by sending books home with our youngest students. We also regularly visit Te Matapihi ki te Ao Nui, our Wellington city library, where tamariki can borrow books.
