We work hard to make Mt Cook School a place where tamariki, whānau and staff feel like they belong.

ESOL

At Mt Cook School we strive for all students to reach their full potential as curious, confident and resilient learners with a strong sense of belonging.

We are fortunate to have a diverse community including approximately sixty five percent of students who speak multiple languages. We have a dedicated English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programme to support our students in their English language development.

Year four to eight students who are new to speaking English attend ESOL lessons where they work in small groups to improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. In these lessons, students participate in a variety of games, hands-on activities and structured literacy to accelerate their English skills and support them to access in-class learning.

In year one to three, students new to speaking English are supported within their classroom.
